HOW OUR ADOPTION PROCESS WORKS
Our adoption review process starts when you submit an
adoption application through our web site. We receive your application the
same day you submit it. Within a few days, we'll check your application to
make sure that required information is there. We then contact you to let
you know that we have it, and possibly clarify any questions we may have
at that time.
The next step is making personal reference checks, and checking with your
veterinarian. If you rent your home, we ask you to have your landlord send
us a written letter, giving permission for you to have the adopted
dachshund in the home. This is very important, as we won't place a
dachshund with you unless we have such authorization.
We then conduct at least one telephone interview with you to give and
receive additional information, etc.
Finally, we set up a home visit. We require that everyone who lives with
you, including animals, is present at the home check, which normally takes
about 45 minutes on average.
The adoption committee then reviews the gathered information, and makes a
decision. We then notify you, and if you are approved for adoption, we'll
try to set up a transport to get you and your adopted dachshund together.
At that time, you'll sign an adoption contract and also pay the adoption
fee.
WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW
It's important that you fill out the adoption application
as completely as possible. Incorrect or missing information slows down the
review process. It could also result in our rejection of your application.
You must be at least 21 years of age to adopt; you must have the financial
means to provide medical treatment and care for the dachshund; and your
other animals, if you have any, must be neutered or spayed.
At the time of adoption, the dachshund will be up-to-date on annual shots;
heartworm free; on preventative heartworm medication; and altered.
We can't guarantee that you will be approved to adopt; nor can we
guarantee that the dachshund you may have specified, will be available for
you to adopt. We work with you and our foster homes to make sure that the
right doxie is adopted by the right family.
Once you're approved, if a transport is needed we try to set it up for the
following weekend. Because this is done by volunteers, your participation
in the transport helps considerably. Sometimes your participation makes
the difference between filling the transport or having to delay an
additional week or more. If you live close to your new family member, you
may decide to pick the doxie up yourself. |
