Stretch (male) and Callie (female) are brother and sister. They, along with another sibling and their mother, were with the same family for the first 4 years of the siblings’ life. Unfortunately the owner died after a long stay in hospital which is how they came to be with FLDR. They are now 5 years old.
It is preferable that both dogs be adopted together; however, if someone is interested, for practical reasons we can split them. We don’t think that would be a very difficult or traumatic, particularly if one goes to a home with another dog as they have always been in a home with multiple dogs. They do not cling to each other in any special way.
After all 4 members of this dog family were with the same foster family, it became necessary to split them up and these two came to us. Both were very nervous and fearful. It took about a week for Callie to warm up to us and let us pet her; now she is affectionate and loves to cuddle. She is not a pushover however; one time when our dog attempted to eat some of her food, she held her own and made him back off. She walks well on a lead now that she is familiar with the area; at first she was very nervous during the entire walk. She is house trained, but does have the occasional accident in our lanai (not in the house).
We have had them for 3 months and Stretch will not let us pet him. He is on anti-anxiety medication, and does behave normally around the house; he lets us walk by him, eats well, is house trained, takes a treat from our hand, and greets us enthusiastically when we come home, but if you attempt to touch him he will run away. When we speak to him in a friendly way, he will wag his tail. There has been a great improvement since he came and we have on occasion touched him or even petted him, but each time it lasted a short time only. It will take a little more time for him to come around. Both of them joined our own dog without any problem. They are typical doxies in their barking at anything unusual happening around the house or in the area.
